What is Screen Printing?

Screen printing is arguably the most versatile of all printing processes.  It can be used to print on a wide variety of substrates, including paper, plastics, glass, metals, fabrics and many other materials.  Common products include posters, decals, signage, scratch off game pieces, credit cards, gift cards, membership cards, hotel room keys, calendars, point-of-purchase displays and specialty ink secondary processes for items like greeting cards.

A screen is created using mesh.  The gauge of the mesh will depend on the ink to be used and the application.  Emulsion is applied and then artwork in the form of film is laid over the screen.  The screen is exposed to light, and the mesh remains open only where the film indicates the ink will be applied.  When the ink is applied over the screen, it is only distributed where the mesh is porous.

A significant aspect of screen printing is that a greater thickness and variety of ink can be applied than is possible with other printing techniques.  This allows for some enhanced visual effects that are not possible using other printing methods.  For example, screen printing can produce enhanced images and can use glitter, magnetic or other specialty inks.

We invite you to explore our website to learn more about screen printing, and determine if it's the right process for your project.
